An amateur radio operator chatted with another station hundreds of kilometres away.
To anyone else it would have sounded like random noise.
To Paul, every transmission told part of a much larger story.
Then something caught his attention.
The BCD325P2 stopped scanning.
A weak signal had appeared on 453.8625 MHz.
There was no voice.
No digital data.
No familiar control channel.
Just a faint carrier, barely rising above the background noise.
Paul leaned forward.
"That's... different."
He switched to another scanner.
The signal was there too.
He enabled the preamplifier.
The signal became stronger.
He connected the directional yagi antenna and slowly rotated it through the darkness outside the car.
The signal peaked toward the north.

It wasn't behaving like a local transmitter.

He wasn't sure.

Paul grinned.
He quickly saved the details into his growing database with a temporary label.

Thousands of people were settling in for the night, completely unaware of the invisible world surrounding them.
Above every rooftop and every street flowed an endless stream of radio signals—businesses coordinating their work, trains reporting their movements, aircraft crossing the state, weather stations collecting data, digital networks exchanging information, and countless other systems quietly doing exactly what they were designed to do.
Most people would never know they were there.
Paul did.
And that was enough.
As he drove home, one thought stayed with him.
The radio spectrum had been keeping its secrets long before he bought his first scanner, and it would continue keeping them long after he was gone.
The trick wasn't learning every secret.
It was being curious enough to keep listening.
Because the bands always had another mystery waiting for the next person patient enough to find it.
